About Global Gateway
The Global Gateway aims to leverage investments and steer them towards the achievement of the UN’s Agenda 2030 and its Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
Guyana is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and a key player in tackling climate change. The moment is decisive for the country to further its fair green transition, in particular in the sectors highlighted in the EU-LAC Global Gateway Investment Agenda (GGIA) presented jointly by the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) at the EU-CELAC Summit in July 2023.
This agenda identifies concrete investment opportunities addressing the region's infrastructure needs. For Guyana, the Global Gateway Investment Agenda focuses on Health, Climate, Energy and Regional Connectivity. These investments will be supported by accompanying measures creating a conducive regulatory and business environment, developing skills, and fostering innovation and technology transfers.
Forestry plays a crucial role in the Global Gateway's mission to advance sustainable development and climate action. Recognizing the critical importance of forests in mitigating climate change, conserving biodiversity, and supporting livelihoods, the initiative seeks to promote investments in sustainable forestry practices and forest conservation. By fostering innovation and technology transfers in the forestry sector, the Global Gateway aims to enhance Guyana's efforts in balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship, contributing to a fair and green transition.

Guyana forestry
There are numerous compelling reasons why this is the opportune moment for EU firms to venture into the market:
Guyana is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. The IMF expects its growth to surpass 43% in 2024.
Guyana is one of the few countries defined as a high forest, low deforestation (HFLD) country and is considered a net carbon sink, whereby forests sequester more carbon than the nation's human activities generate.
With the potential to sustainably harvest 1.2 M m³ of timber per year (currently below 400,000 m³), Guyana offers a promising opportunity for growth in the forestry sector. The Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT VPA) signed between Guyana and the EU in November 2022 further supports this growth, ensuring the legal trade of forest goods.
There is room for the expansion of timber production and associated added-value activities. The Guyana government also offers incentives for manufacturers of wooden products, such as tax breaks and subsidies, making it an attractive destination for investment in the forestry sector.
The high growth rate of Guyana's economy has sparked a construction boom, creating a growing local market for value-added wooden products. The initiative from the Ministry of Housing to build thousands of low-income wooden houses is a testament to the potential and demand for such products.
Manufacturing in Guyana and expansion within the Caribbean and Latin American markets is also possible.
Guyana has achieved PEFC endorsement of its national forest certification system, enabling forest owners in the country to obtain PEFC certification.. Approximately fifty-two percent (52%) of the state forest estate has been allocated to timber harvesting under sustainable forest management techniques to ensure the sustainability of Guyana's forest resources.
There are also opportunities for research and development on exotic wood species.
